These Raidlight belong to the zero-drop family where the arch goes unnoticed. The visual effect is always surprising on this type of product, especially on the inside of the shoes. They also have very thick soles; you can’t help be reminded of certain Hoka One One models. The comparison attempt stops there because the sensations that Raidlight Responsiv Ultra deliver are unique to the French brand.
From the very first strides you feel the well-balanced cushioning, so you can run long distances. The filtration is both present yet not at all too much as it doesn’t reduce the energy in the foot strike. You have precision in the foot strike without losing rebound from the cushioning. This is also true on cross-slopes where the Raidlight Responsiv Ultra keeps their grip and a certain proprioception quality. The sole is fluid and smooth, on any terrain types but also on the road where you can really speed up the pace. Please note; the Raidlight Responsiv Ultra make a characteristic noise when running on hard, somewhat dry surfaces.
On roads, technical terrain or easy running trails, you have a reassuring grip, even if the rear of the sole tends to hold mud. In steep slopes the forefoot grip is powerful and unfailing. Overall, these Raidlight shoes are confidence building.
Their rather “clumsy” look, due to its imposing sole, may give you the idea that they have inertia, this is not at all the case. The foot strike is precise and they don’t weigh much (295g in size 42.5).
The heel envelopment is especially good and above all very comfortable. The main two points to improve the Raidlight Responsiv Ultra, like the Raidlight Responsiv XP (https://www.test4outside.com/produit/raidlight-responsiv-xp/), at the top of the laces it is too painful. This is due to the plastic reinforcement, which gives better distribution of the lace’s pressure, yet causes a pressure point if overtightened. The top edge of the shoes is very stiff and can cause friction.
The second point concerns the fold at the big toe. There’s the flexible plastic, which lets the lace distribute the tension. Depending on your morphology (you must choose the size of the Raidlight Responsiv Ultra with the greatest care), you can have a pressure point which will make itself known after a few kilometers. As is customary on these type of shoes, there is no foam padding in this area.
The foot is well held thanks to a wide elastic band and the upper: these are classic solutions but they work well. The laces must be adjusted with care at the front part of the Raidlight Responsiv Ultra. We liked the design of the rear of the shoes where it has a particularly comfortable and very flexible Achilles heel area.
The stone guard is flexible but it fulfills its mission.
They are very carefully made, with quality materials and beautiful assemblies (no seams visible).
The Raidlight Responsiv Ultra have a very effective sole, both in terms of cushioning and grip on various terrains. Well-constructed, the Raidlight however do have a few stiff areas which can cause pressure spots depending on your feet’s morphology.
