361° Taroko 2

HOT DEAL

We tested the 361° Taroko in 2019. The base of the version 2 remains the same, there are however changes that improve the way that it behaves. If you consider its price, and its great performance, you have a product that logically wins the Hot Deal Award, which is awarded for excellent value for money.

The 361° Taroko 2 are versatile trail running shoes that you can use on a wide range of terrain types: singles, forest tracks and road sections. We even used it for athletics (its cushioning was appreciated). On the other hand, the 361° Taroko 2 aren’t designed for technical or muddy terrain because the grip isn’t really suited to it.

That said, the 361 ° Taroko 2 are very good in more ways than one. They combine support and comfort, sole quality, good finishing and durability.

We noticed two changes compared to the initial version. It’s not the same tongue (even though the old one was fine) and above all, the new Taroko has a completely new adjustment fit at the laces and heel. The end of the laces go through a loop that goes around the ankle to the heel (photos). When the laces are tight, the thin cord is tensioned and provides a more precise foot hold. We only wondered how long the lace/cord junction would last as there’s a lot of friction in this area.
There’s plenty of heel padding and the shape also provides great heel grip.

The comfort is first rate overall, you can run with the 361° Taroko 2 for a long time without experiencing any friction or pressure points. These 361° Taroko 2 have padding around the ankle that are similar to the Arc’Teryx Norvan SL and the Salomon Sonic 3 Accelerate. The fabric around the ankle is very soft and flexible (no edging). Inside, the thick interior foam padding are like bumps. It’s a very fluid design and comfortable. The downside is that dust, sand or even small pebbles get into the shoe, as the soft fabric rarely squeezes against the foot. 361° however dealt with it quite well because not much does manage to get in.

The new tongue works well and stays in place. The new lacing system takes a bit of getting used to.

They have a high 9mm drop. This is distributed differently compared to the first 361° Taroko model: 21mm at the heel and 12mm at the forefoot. The Taroko 2: 26.5mm at the heel and 17.5mm at the forefoot.

Plenty of cushioning that responds to all situations where filtration is needed. At the same time it isn’t excessive, it has been well-balanced between the front and back of the Taroko 2. They aren’t the fastest shoes (300g for size 41.5) but the foot strike is good, and we didn’t notice any problems with lateral support.

We really liked their ultra-resistant and breathable mesh. You don’t notice sharp stones underfoot. An integrated stone guard provides protection without stiffening the front of the Taroko 2.

The finishes, like all the 361° range, are perfect. The materials, and assemblies are in line with big-brand names.

The weight difference is minimal between the first Tarako: 295g in 42.5 for version 1 and 300g in size 41.5 for the Taroko 2.

This 361° Taroko 2, at the listed price of 119.99 euros, is a good deal for those who want a versatile trail running shoe (except for very technical terrain). Comfortable, durable, cushioned, precise, and very well-finished, it has everything to satisfy a demanding runner. They deserved the Hot Deal Award from Test4outside.com.
