Arc’Teryx calls the Norvan VT 2 trail running shoes. At the end of our tests we prefer to call them more fast hiking shoes or approach shoes. This is because we didn’t find the stride very present for a number of reasons.
The Arc’Teryx Norvan VT 2 are inert, rather heavy and the forefoot is stiff. Their cushioning is practically non-existent (a little in the heel) and on all the hard sections you feel every vibration in your joints and therefore you concentrate carefully on every step where you put your feet. Forefoot runners come out of this better and heavier built runners too because you can squash them a little to gain a bit of flexibility. The Arc’Teryx Norvan VT 2 also make a distinctive tapping sound on hard ground.
But, all their other qualities make them lean towards fast hiking: the super Vibram®Megagrip solethat is a great combi between the depth of the lugs, which provide some flexibility (particularly on technical terrain); the stone guard, which is responsible for the stiffness at the front of the shoe (and the weight), yet is perfect for walking in stony terrain. Last but not least, the attention to detail brought by the manufacturing makes these shoes durable.
The Arc’Teryx Norvan VT 2 have very precise foot envelopment that suit narrow feet. The lacing goes right to the front of the foot so gives precise adjustment and the flat laces slide well. Just like their sister brand Salomon the laces can be ticked away in a small pocket at the top of the tongue. When you put them on give the tongue a tug as it has a tendency to slide inside. These second version Norvans have a second loop at the back of the heel to aid putting the shoes on even more easily.
We really liked the ankle material which is thin and comfortable and doesn’t soak up water. The size 42 2/3 weigh 305g.
The Arc’Teryx Norvan VT 2 are good shoes for fast hiking but less interesting for trail running.
