Atomic Savor Amid Visor HD

Atomic launches a new helmet with integrated “helicopter pilot” pilot visor on the market with the Savor Amid Visor HD, while the market is moving more towards a severable headphone/goggles (not necessarily the same brand). However, we will see that visor integration to a helmet has some advantages, especially when it is particularly well done. It should be pointed out by the way, that the Savor Amid Visor HD is removable and that the helmet can be worn with any other goggles.

The advantages of having integrated goggles (visor) are obvious: the goggles are fixed firmly in place, no need to manage and adjust any strap that often slips. You just slip the visor down over your eyes and that’s it. It is “all in one” and very practical (you never forget your goggles at the bottom of a bag in the car). The design and fluidity of the lines is rather interesting. The other big advantage is the ventilation because the visor is not sitting in direct contact with your skin, so air passes over your cheeks and nose, dissipating any fog.

The only real disadvantage is that once you have an integrated visor, you have to unscrew the visor and change it if it becomes damaged, or opt for goggles.
You must also make sure to tighten your helmet because the weight on the forehead moves the helmet when you ski on bumpy terrain. Otherwise the visor rests on your nose. This problem you don’t get with ordinary goggles because they are in direct contact with your face (its weight is not supported by the end of the helmet).

That said we used this helmet for many months at the end of last season. It uses MID technology that is well known to cyclists, one of the ways to protect the brain from shock waves.

The Atomic Savor Amid Visor HD is quite light considering the integration of the visor. It is warm thanks to the Merino lining (and easily removable for washing) very comfortable and soft.

There is a twisting adjustment system on the back of the helmet, which unfortunately isn’t a Boa system. It is quite accurate when you tighten it, but when you loosen it you hear the sound resonating as it unclips on the notches. Tighten it with care as the system can apply strong pressure on both sides of the back of the head.

It has a MTB helmet type chinstrap with a magnet system to guide the attachment of the two parts. It takes a little time to get used to handling it with gloves on or with cold fingers. It’s design is neat.

It has a wide chinstrap protection, which is comfortable and also made in Merino wool. This helmet is well-ventilated at the back and on the top of the head. A shutter system is very easy to handle and means you can air the top of your head. There are also two air intakes at the front. The helmet does not make any whistling sounds when you’re moving.

The lens is a beautiful achievement in terms of contrast, details, even in bad weather, it’s very pleasant. The lens adapts to almost any situation. When snow is wet or it’s raining, the water runs off and stays a near the black plastic part at the visor’s base (where the Atomic logo is).

Atomic has superbly designed the junction between the lens and the helmet when it snows a lot or if it rains: this waterproof zone evacuates moisture onto the sides and it doesn’t run down between the helmet and the visor, it doesn’t run over your face.

It keeps the heat at ear level, comfortable but most importantly you can still hear well; very important in terms of security.

More so than with a traditional helmet, you really have to buy the right size Atomic Savor Amid Visor HD because otherwise if it doesn’t perfectly fit your morphology, with vibrations it moves down slightly onto your face.

The Atomic is a very efficient, high-quality helmet that is well-designed, comfortable, with a judiciously integrated visor that has undeniable optical qualities. It is versatile and can be worn with or without the visor, or with goggles.

    1. Mark says:

Love the visor for the clarity and peripheral vision and have skied with this helmet for a full season, fit is the best I ever had size XL was perfect. Last season on -26C day had issues with fogging caused mainly by face mask for COVID, switched to mask with better nasal venting and no problems. Early this season skied in heavy sleeting conditions and ended up with water running on inside of visor and pooling on top of foam, not normal conditions for Canadian Rockies, rest of me got soaked as well! Also found that blowing snow from behind can collect inside visor. Contrary to review here I found the helmet to whistle above 45km/hr unless the vents were closed. Also impossible to purchase low light visor in Canada and European sites are not allowed to ship to Canada? Tried to contact Atomic through local supplier and never heard back. Early this season thought I would try the helmet without the visor for heavy white out conditions and found that the retaining bolt for the visor on one side would spin endlessly and made the visor non removable. I was able to return the helmet for full refund as my size was not available. I will be going back to googles and have ordered a new Atomic Savor GT AMID for the exceptional fit, I am hopeful that this helmet will not whistle at speed ( my son has the Revent +AMID and experiences no whistling. Loved the helmet but the lack of available replacement visors is troubling.
