In a fabulous building in the Chamonix valley, the small passionate Blue Ice team design and produce innovative, often minimalist and lightweight products, without skimping on technicity and durability.
We had the chance to test the Choucas Light harness over a long period of time.
This product is exceptionally light (84g size S) you can put it on with both feet firmly on the ground thanks to its opening and re-closing thigh straps.
Folded neatly in its mesh bag, the weight in your hand seems ridiculous!
It comes in three sizes. Choose the size that will suit the activity – for example ski mountaineering (where it excels) you need to take into account the thickness of all your layers.
It conforms to the norms for climbing harnesses and so gains a wide usage.
We tested it throughout the winter in ski mountaineering conditions. Once unraveled we were seduced by its aesthetics, using the brand’s blue and white colors.
The two large independent belay loops are connected at their base by a clipping strap, and also the belt is easily adjusted.
The thigh loops close with a fast and secure metal clip opening system. It is locked in place with a small elastic.
To unlock the system you just pull on the elastic and undo the metal buckle. It is simple, instinctive and efficient. With gloves on it’s a bit more difficult and of course mittens … well forget it!
No extra accessories, the bare minimum, just the necessities. There are two gear loops one on either side of the belt and two tying loops on the thigh straps.
Once wearing it, it is so comfortable and light you don’t even realize it’s there.
The material has a good compromise between stiffness and suppleness, breathability and lightness.
During belaying or slightly prolonged sitting, we didn’t notice any discomfort.
Intelligently the rear elastic linked from the belt to each thigh is adjustable, and especially quick to remove and replace. Obviously as they are exposed they are open to abrasion.
If you choose your size well you will have a harness that is well-designed and well-finished, ultra-light, practically unbeatable for those who know their stuff, and especially for ski touring or ski mountaineering don’t hesitate to take it with you.
