We wore and rode with the Bollé Furo Mips for a long time. It’s a road helmet with a ventilation system that adapts to the changing seasons and climatic conditions. On the top of the helmet, three removable plastic plates enable extra ventilation. To adapt to the outdoor conditions, you can choose which ones to remove for more or less ventilation. This system is simple, practical and enables good interior temperature regulation. The other (very) big advantage is that it provides protection in the rain when the helmet is completely closed.
You just need to customize the Bollé Furo Mips before setting off. In other words, it is easier to push the plates from the inside of the helmet rather than trying to remove them with your nails!
We will come back to the helmet’s general design, but let’s talk about the main interest of the Furo, its Mips technology, short for Multi Directional Impact Protection System. To sum it up, Mips technology absorbs some of the oblique impacts that can cause real brain damage (which floats and moves in the cerebrospinal fluid). The helmet has a second structure that allows the head to move slightly and reduce the impact of the shock. The MIPS now equips helmets for cycling, mountain biking and skiing.
Once you are wearing it, the Bollé Furo Mips makes no sound, nothing squeaks. It is in fairly close contact with your head, but easily forgotten. The protective foams are effective and the headband adjustment system does not cause pressure points at the base of the skull. The wheel, which is not a Boa system, is pleasant to handle, it feels kind of soft. It is easy to find and handle with gloves on. The adjustment notches are well gauged. The helmet remains in place, with quite a high position. Be careful to tighten it so that it does not tilt slightly laterally.
When riding the ventilation system is effective. There is an air intake on the top of the helmet, called the “Naca duct”, inspired by the air intakes on sports cars: better aerodynamics and ducted air flow for better ventilation. We really appreciated the Bollé Furo Mix’s design, especially the back, with a very techno look!
Its chin strap is a classic design, and it’s easy to adjust. Cyclists who are very sensitive to comfort will probably regret the lack of a foam at the chin, but honestly, we didn’t notice it.
The Bollé Furo Mips is a very good road helmet. It adapts to the climatic conditions thanks to the fast and simple ventilation system. Comfortable, carefully made, kitted out with the Mips protection technology, which is an undoubtable additional asset.
