Columbia Trans Alps F.K.T II

The Trans Alps F.K.T II has cushioning the entire length of the sole.

There is substantial cushioning at the heel, which is firmer in the middle and softer on the edges. The forefoot has the same sensations, firm in the center under the forefoot and softer on the edges. The Transalp filters very well with slight lateral instability.

In the downhill you can go for it without worrying if you will suffer from the rocky ground. Those who prefer closer contact with the ground will prefer a different model. For others who want to protect their joints this Columbia is perfect.

The sole has an aggressive design, especially at the heel and the toes. At the heel the inverted lugs help you retain your balance if you get knocked off slightly, and the lugs do not hold onto mud.

The toe box is quite wide. The lacing adjustment isn’t that good as the laces are very thin and don’t slide well, so you have to do them several times from the front of the foot to have the correct foothold. The laces blocking system works well and once the surplus is stowed away the laces don’t budge. Columbia has calculated almost to the millimeter the length of the laces. If you like doing a double knot – you need agile fingers!

The thick tongue is made from a surprising material and is an indication of the superb quality.

Over all comfort is very good, the foam padding is comfortable and well-positioned around the heel, which in turn is well held.

The stone guard is integrated into the mesh and works very well. These Trans Alps are superbly made, the materials seem tough and fitted with care. Despite the volume of mesh used these shoes are quite warm (maybe due to reinforced mesh at the front of the foot that could obstruct airflow?).

These Columbia Trans Alps F.K.T II are great shoes for taking on technical terrain without a care. Their substantial cushioning is targeted at runners who don’t want to have any discomfort on rocky terrain. You gain in comfort what you lose in precision.
