These shorts with a pad insert for biking have been designed to be used with the Triathlon Postural Aero SS Kona 2019 top that we have already tested. It is a complete outfit in the Hawaiian race’s colors, a limited series. We were able to wear it for the Embrunman XXL course, a conclusive test.
First impressions of these mini shorts are that they are ultra-light (92g), and cut very short up the thighs. Their comfort is thanks to the stretchy fabric that gives you a curious impression that you are naked! Frankly when we took it out of the packet we wondered how we were going to get this tiny piece of material on. The Triathlon Under Control Oxygen Kona 2019 short does size small, beware triathletes if you have big thighs or a wide pelvis, you will need a wider model.
These shorts give good support, are slightly compressive without any hindrance to movements. You may think at first sight that they have a fragile aspect, this is not the case, you can pull them in all directions without any worries. The fabric scuff-up between the thighs after cycling, and no signs of wear and tear. Although The Compressport logos don’t look like they would stay attached too long…
These shorts are a variation of a trail running product (UTMB® Ultra-Trail Under Control Short 2019) and has a pad insert for cycling. Following the rest of the shorts, the insert is minimalist and you do wonder about its effectiveness. Once on the bike, you do of course notice that they aren’t as comfortable as pure cycling shorts but, they are surprisingly well-designed. During the Embrunman 180km, the hours in the saddle were perfectly fine. Unlike the Compressport trio already tested, the Kona TR3 Aero Trisuit and the TR3 Aero Trisuit, the SS Kona 2019 Triathlon Postural-Air are not kitted out with the small anti-slip “pimples” that we really appreciated: these give an excellent grip on the saddle.
One of the major advantages of these shorts is the ability to quickly go to the toilet without having to take off an entire trisuit: you save time and it’s more practical.
We really liked the way they didn’t hold water and evacuated sweat very quickly. Whilst swimming, you also forget you’re wearing these shorts, same for its insert that you don’t feel at all. In very hot conditions running the marathon, these shorts are a real pleasure, the only downside is that your legs are more exposed to the sun (they are short!).
At the back, Compressport has kitted out the Kona 2019 Triathlon Postural Aero SS with a system to hook your gels on. We didn’t use this accessory, but it could be a good option.
With the Kona 2019 Postural Aero SS Triathlon Top, Compressport has designed a superb set that will impress you. With a snazzy look, this outfit is also technical, with well-designed details. These shorts can also be used for trail running.
