HELLY HANSEN ODIN MOUNTAIN 3L SHELL JKT

FIRST

The Helly Hansen Odin Mountain 3L shell Jkt is designed to face difficult conditions and full-on skiing. The fact that the brand chose to call this product Odin (Thor’s father), the god of the gods who fears nothing, is no coincidence.

We certainly remained calm out testing it when the elements were unleashed. We skied with it in the rain and wet snow for very long hours. It didn’t leak anywhere and we particularly appreciated its protection from the wind as well as against the wet. This is rare enough because most membranes end up saturating with water after a while. The Helly Hansen membrane is not only waterproof but it is breathable, at least it was when wearing a Primaloft® insulated mid-layer and a technical first layer.

The only place water could enter is a well-known weak point: the double zips. In fact, under the arms, the vents are closed with a waterproof zip: the two sliders side by side leave a small void where water can get in. But generally when it rains, the two zips are well wedged under the armpits. It is also incomprehensible that zip manufacturers haven’t put double waterproof sliders on the market that fit together.

In addition to this waterproofness, which was fully appreciated, the other strong point is the very well-designed hood which can be worn over your ski helmet without any discomfort. Again, this is rare in itself. Lateral visibility is not interfered with, the hood follows your head’s movements without pulling at the neck or causing tension.
If you don’t need this hood, it takes up little space at the neckline and, again, it doesn’t cause tension when the collar is closed (when wearing a helmet).

The hood is easily adjusted at three points, even with gloves on as the tips are a good size.

Let’s clear up the two (minor) negative points with this Helly Hansen Odin Mountain 3L Jkt shell: the snow skirt adjustment and the absence of a ski pass pocket on the left arm. The removable snow skirt is well-designed, it sits securely in place thanks to a wide elastomer strip, it is comfortable too but it’s not super easy to close. You have to slide two metal hooks into a sort of daisy chain to tighten it. The hooks aren’t that easy to slip into the elastic bands, especially when you have gloves on.

For everything else this Helly Hansen Odin Mountain 3L Jkt shell is a bestseller. The list is full of well-designed details: quality of the waterproof zips that slide easily, perfect collar height and comfort, easy to adjust powerful Velcro on the cuffs, Recco, large pockets, cut quite snug to the body, but not too much. also the fabric is soft and slightly stretchy. It does make a slight rustling sound, a bit like a Gore-Tex®.

Last comment, depending on how thick your gloves are, or if they go up high on your forearm, the diameter at the cuffs may not be big enough to let you put your jacket on over your gloves to optimize the wind, snow and water tightness.

The Helly Hansen Odin Mountain 3L Jkt shell unhesitatingly wins the Test4outside.com FIRST Award. This jacket is tailored for harsh weather conditions and provides maximum protection. Well-cut, comfortable, very well finished, this is a must have.

We tested this jacket with pants from the same brand, the Helly Hansen Odin Mountain 3L shell bib pant.
