HOKA One One Speed Goat 2

The second generation Speed Goat is out on the market since the summer. The Speed Goat has been a great success for Hoka, runners appreciate the 100% HOKA “One One” DNA with king size cushioning. Others who prefer closer contact with the ground have avoided this Speed Goat model. The 2nd Version will change minds …

The ground contact immediately feels better with a wider cushioning. The foothold is good thanks to the quality of the materials used and the reinforcements, and pressure distribution. Nothing moves, either in the heel or the forefoot. But if you have wide feet this shoe will be too narrow.

The flat laces thread through 6 (or 7) eyelets and are very efficient. The tongue is padded enough to give the comfort you need.

The stone guard is still a bit lightweight for a trail shoe, as the plastic is a little thin to be 100% efficient.

Comfortable yet lightweight at a mere 278g. But the Hoka Speed Goat 2’s real DNA isn’t here, it is of course in the supersized cushioning.

Forefoot runners can use the Speed Goat 2, which has great spring and good grip. The cushioning is well dosed for going fast. Heel strikers will rejoice in the cushioning in the mid-foot. The shoe’s sole manages the rear to forefoot movement and laterally. The loss in precision is made up by the good filtration. The best thing about this cushioning is being able to run like a crazy horse in the downhill and not feel anything.

The disadvantage: you lose energy if you are badly positioned because of the cushioning. The Hoka is pleasant and efficient for trail running if your positioning is perfected.

Its oversized look hides a precision shoe and in fact it isn’t as high as you think, the design makes you believe that the sole is thicker than it actually is. The drop is a mere 4.5mm. We didn’t find that renowned instability of the older models.

The shoe has spring and a good fluid stride. Stiffness and torsion are standard for a trail running shoe.

Pronator runners should be careful of wear and tear of the foam; it appears to squash down quite quickly. Some brands admit that trail running shoes have a life span of not more than 500km: how many does Hoka have?

The little tab at the back of the shoe is marvelous for helping you put the shoe on. We liked the look of the product and its quality, the materials used and flattering style. The only question is how quickly this lightweight product will wear.

A very good shoe, different with king size cushioning. It certainly gives you the option of being economic in the downhill.
