The Hoka One One Torrent 2 came close to winning the Test4outside.com FIRST Award. They really are exciting shoes for going fast in trail running.
Just a remark: the colors on the photo provided by Hoka One One of the product are not at all faithful to those of the shoes delivered. The shoes are quite frankly much prettier than on the visual.
Let’s look at the Hoka One One Torrent 2 intrinsic qualities. The testers really appreciated their precision and efficiency. Their slightly “lightweight” stone guard and arch support, which could be a little more assertive, unfortunately deprive these Torrent 2 of a podium position. For all the rest, they are flawless.
First we really appreciated the sole quality, which offers a combination between ground contact and cushioning: the cursor leans more towards precision than filtration. The cushioning is nevertheless present. Well-distributed, it doesn’t interfere with the foot strike. You do quickly find the hard spot without suffering from the terrain. If you have slight imbalances/rear placement errors they are of little consequence. On the other hand, if you hammer the shoes vertically with the heel, you quickly find a hard base just after the small cushioning effect. At the front, filtration is also present but not very noticeable. You don’t actually feel sharp stones underfoot even if other shoes may be more effective in this area.
If you a runner whose foot placement is not precise, balanced placement, and at least a mid-foot ground strike, you will suffer over long distances. For the others, you’ll appreciate the stride’s quality and especially its ability to accelerate on technical terrain and on the slopes. Sometimes you feel like you have a Hoka One One Mach 3 at the base, but in a trail version. The 5mm drop is identical on the two models.
The front provides good spring thanks to an effective grip on the climb. Reassuring on the descent, they let you fly thanks to their featherweight: on our scales they weighed just 250g in size 42 2/3, they are announced at 264g by Hoka One One.
The lacing is very good, ensuring excellent pressure distribution and easily adjustable. We were skeptical about the flat lace, which we thought would need to double-knot, this is not the case.
As soon as you slip your feet into these Hoka One One Torrent 2, you notice their overall comfort. No seams cause extra-pressure. The foam around the ankle and the tongue are perfect. The Achilles heel-wrap has also been carefully designed.
The toe box is both precise and comfortable, owing to the (very) slightly, stretchy mesh.
Quality manufacturing with a strict minimum of stitching. The design is fluid, well-conceived and you can always look for a glue smudge or ill-fitting materials. We won’t comment on the product’s durability even if we did rather abuse the Hoka One One Torrent 2 on very rocky limestone profiles.
Its capabilities make the Hoka One One Torrent 2 an excellent product for the Xterra: lightweight, fast over short distances, and grippy.
These Hoka One One Torrent 2 are excellent shoes that give you a smile in your stride. Very light, efficient, comfortable, cushioned, but not too much, and they let you go fast not necessarily in the very technical terrain.
