We used this vacuum insulated bottle for many months. It travelled everywhere in our bags, in the airplane hold, everywhere, we were pretty rough with it.
Even if the outside of the bottle finally got a bit scratched, and a bit dented after several bangs, we can confirm the bottle is tough. We are far removed from the flasks of old, that had an interior glass lining. With this Hydro Flask even if the outside gets a beating the insulated inside doesn’t deteriorate.
The flask allows you to keep liquids either hot or cold. For the latter the wide neck is perfect to slip a few ice cubes inside. The wide neck also allows you to clean the bottle efficiently with a bottle brush.
The brand’s promise, is to keep a drink hot (or cold) the morning until the afternoon. We were a bit sceptic, we checked it out with hot water. The capacity of this Standard Mouth bottle is 21oz, which is substantial. Obviously keeping the drink hot (or cold) depends on the exterior temperature and the number of times you open the bottle to drink from it. But having said that we found that the bottle kept liquids incredibly hot a very long time. We were surprised to find that after several hours of hiking the tea was still very hot.
The performance could be improved though, it is designed with a double metal wall. The interior layer rises to the top of the bottle and forms the neck. Therefore this piece of metal drives the heat loss and the thermal exchanges between the outside and the inside: therefore this is where you lose heat (or let heat in).
The aesthetics of the neck and the hygienic properties are good because you drink directly from the metal, easy to clean but you would improve insulation if it was different.
The lid with its plastic handle is easy to close and reopen. You can attach the bottle practically anywhere. The attachment screw has been well-designed for altitude: two little notches enable you to evacuate air when you open the bottle in the mountains (after going up).
When you pour the liquid it doesn’t drip all down the neck. The neck diameter is good, designed to be held easily, you are unlikely to drop it.
A very good bottle at a reasonable price, tough and capable of conserving hot or cold liquids for many hours.
The brand, Hydro Flask, is a young business created in 2009 in Bend, Oregon, a town surrounded with desert to the east and mountains to the west. This outdoor dreamscape is the obvious birthplace for such a brand. We like the brand’s marketing and the colorful designs that make you want to use them.
