Julbo Cyrius

We skied non-stop for two weeks wearing the Julbo Cyrius goggles. During this time we experienced every weather condition possible: snow, rain, wind, sun, etc.

The Cyrius seems very similar to the Julbo Alpha that we also tested.

On closer inspection the strap has wider anti-slip strips that grip better on the helmet. For the rest, excluding the lens, they have the same manufacturing. You go from 89.90 euros for the Alpha to 169.90 euros for the Cyrius. Is such a leap in price worth it? Instinctively we’d say no, because for a skier who isn’t really that tuned into optical lens quality the Alpha does the job, even if it isn’t top quality. For others the optical quality of the Reactiv Photochromic lenses is a definite bonus. The goggles react to the changing light conditions.

22 seconds is the reaction speed announced from going from 2 to 4 protection. You can’t really check the speed of the change in the action but you can see the change. The lens darkens and lightens quickly, and still remains quite dark when the sun has disappeared behind the clouds, or mountains, at the end of a December day for example. On some occasions we would’ve preferred them a bit lighter.

The sun protection is good. Likewise for the quality of the terrain’s details. We also found a slight dominance of magenta starting from the middle of the lens upwards, like the Julbo Alpha but a lot less strong.

The field of vision is the same, with a slight black border (not a problem). The most pronounced thing is how comfortable they are on your face and nose, they are flexible and don’t squeak.

The other amazing point is their ventilation. Like the Julbo Alpha, the Cyrius never fog up. This is premium quality, so you can ski fast and you feel threads of wind slip through, and when it’s cold your eyes are protected.

The frame is a nice shape and sits easily under the helmet on your face. When you move the goggles onto your helmet the lens can sometimes move out of position: not easy to put back in.

The Julbo Cyrius are great goggles that don’t fog up. Their photochromic lens provides great versatility and superb optical quality.
