Julbo Explorer 2.0

Julbo has successfully revamped the classic leather-sided glacier sunglasses by adding a retro flash of yellow and new materials. The look is hot vintage!

The Explorer is designed for high mountain activity to go up against the toughest conditions.

First remark: removable sidepieces. This could be just a geeky detail but not at all you have total sun protection, nothing gets through. They are also easily removable: To take them off you just need to unclip the pieces using your nail then lift them off the central axe. To put them back on you place the lateral axes in the slots and then clip in the central axe.

On the whole these glasses are tough despite the flexibility of the plastics used, you would need to see in the long-term if the sidepieces stand up to constant use. BTW: just to point out, it would’ve been nice to have had a special little inside pocket in the case to store the sidepieces when not in use (even if it’s not often).

The Explorer fits very comfortably. The arms adapt to the morphology of your head and are also completely adjustable; you can fold them and make them narrower so they slide into a helmet. There is also a small hole at the ends of the arms to pass a well-designed safety cord that adjusts at the back of the head and is very easy to take on and off.

The most important of all is the lens quality: Julbo has judiciously chosen to use photochromic lenses that change from light to dark (and vice versa) depending on luminosity. So you can keep them on when you go from bright sunlight into shadowy areas without having to take them off – it changes rapidly from dark tinted lenses to clear and vice-versa making them very comfortable to wear.

The lenses are also polarized, as always, Julbo lens quality is hard to beat. The attention to detail and the field of vision are superb.

The designers have taken special care with the anti-fog treatment not only with the treatment itself but also the frame design, which enables good airflow and ventilation, therefore no fogging up. They may be imposing but are not heavy and very comfortable to wear.

We did find that the case was a bit of a squeeze for these Explorer 2.0. You can open the zip with one hand. The case is lightweight and protective with the use of foam padding on top and a hard layer underneath. But on the sides there is just fabric protection and we wonder if this is enough protection inside a backpack to avoid them being squashed?

We were very happy with these high-performance sunglasses, excellent at high altitude, strong, the luxury of fast reacting photochromic lenses and excellent quality.

They have optimal protection against UV rays whilst being completely anti-fog. Even if quality means cost, the high price for the Explorer 2.0 should not stop you from buying them.
