The Kalenji Kiprun Trail MT is the “grippy” model of this trail running range. These clamp the ground with force, especially in mud, as the lugs never clog up. On gravelly ground they are also fantastic. They almost seem a bit oversized, especially on the front sides. That said, the confidence gained thanks to its super grip crossing the slant of a hillside, and on the downhill is amazing. Also this sole doesn’t wear out quickly, even on really rough terrain.
The major positive point with this shoe, other than the grip, is its filtering capabilities; you feel nothing charging down a descent, it feels like you squash everything in your path.
Even though the cushioning is limited throughout the whole shoe, it is a precision shoe that manages to filter out the vibrations nicely. You lose a bit of comfort but gain in precision; this really is a mountain trail shoe.
Well balanced even with the prominent stone guard, it has a good flow and is pleasant to run with; forefoot, mid-foot or heel strike. Good spring and you don’t feel like energy is lost.
It’s a shoe that installs confidence and a desire to run energetically.
It would’ve been nicer a little lighter but you can’t have everything. The 10mm drop is quite high but it isn’t unstable.
The quality of the manufacturing is very close to others in the trail running market, the collages and assembly have been executed with precision and they feel sturdy.
Their over all comfort is good due to the use of foam in strategic places like at the heel. We suffered no aches or pains in this area. The toe box has been well designed and even after long distance running there is enough room for feet that swell. They suit medium width feet and the foot strike is universal.
The flat lacing is easy to handle, care must be taken to tighten the forefoot enough. The dispersion of pressure across the foot is good and the thick tongue provides even more comfort. Double knotting the laces is a good idea because they have a tendency to slip. The surplus ends of the laces can be nicely stored in the pocket at the top of the tongue.
