MSR Revo Ascent 22

FIRST

The Revo Ascent are alpine all-terrain snowshoes, particularly suitable for hiking in rugged landscapes. We tested it on the steep and chaotic slopes of the Corsican mountains.

First thoughts: they are light and compact, with a nice high-tech look. Adjusting the bindings: there is no preset size and so the advantage is that they can be adapted to all types of shoes.
The four-strap system seems a little “complex”, but you quickly get used to it. You position your foot on the deck, not too far forward, so the tip of the shoe is at the crampon tip, then tighten the back strap and then those above starting with the top one. Once the four straps are fixed, the shoe is perfectly held and without being too tight.

We were worried that the straps, once under tension would cut the circulation but not at all. They are very comfortable, the straps handle the off-axis twisting movements really well. To adjust the straps, you use a system of metal buckle and eyelets, easy to do, unless your fingers are a bit chilly, and then it takes more patience.

Warning! There is a left and right foot, don’t mix them up, the straps are always on the outside of the foot.

In the action, they are irreproachable. Thanks to the two steel rails under the snowshoe and the two long, curved front spikes, you can attack the steepest of slopes, including hard snow or icy parts, no problem. They are precise and stable, they really grip the terrain as it changes: you feel very safe. We think they are really designed for difficult slopes and hard snow. A robust snowshoe, even if the plastic didn’t much like the rocky patches we went through. They left a few scratches, but that’s all, and our testers really did put them through their paces, in the extreme. The straps and adjustments are very tough.

Another very important quality is that they are silent, and out in the mountains this is more than appreciable. Only one small comment on the technical level, the heels have no locking system in the raised position, so they sometimes have difficulty staying in place and fall back down. The straps tend to pop out of the holding notch, but there’s no risk that they will open or loosen.

There are two models, the 22 IN and a larger model the 25 IN for those weighing over 90kg of total loaded weight, it’s a slightly heavier model: 2.04 kg.

Price wise, they are in the high end of the range, very expensive, but not without reason. We are dealing with very safe, light and comfortable snowshoes, which run well on all terrain types, particularly extreme, and are solidly made. All of its qualities make them a must have.
