OSPREY Rolling Transporter 120

We could talk for hours about this excellent pack that has travelled with us (and still does) around the planet on multiple trips.

First of all it’s a very beautiful object, very well finished, with a look that is both sporty and urban. The Rolling Transporter 120 stands out from all these duffle style packs with the superb script on the side and top.

Tested over many months, we really appreciated its system on wheels, well-proportioned which takes the weight off your back during transit. You can pilot it with the retractable towing handle with only one hand, on practically any terrain: except in sand where it will find its limits. But in gravel, it reacts well. There is a slight noise on pavements or hard surfaces, but it nothing too annoying. The chassis is rigid so the pack doesn’t twist. Osprey chose to design a pack that is long and flat, but when you try and transport it in busy places (on a very busy train platform for example) it is more difficult to manage when the surface changes levels – even if the handle is very efficient it is sometimes difficult to hold the pack with one hand. Some brands like Gregory have designed a very wide handle for holding the pack when going down pavements.

The other inconvenience of a long bag is that in the train – well it’s too long! It won’t fit into the space provided.

The base of the bag is a combination of toughness and balanced weight. A plastic chassis protects and stiffens the base. A stiff handle has been put there: practical and enables you to put the bag upright, where it will stand easily. The underneath is subject to wear and tear, the materials held up well, especially during pavement descents where the underneath can rub.

Despite its large size, the Rolling Transporter 120 is easy to handle thanks to no less than 6 handles: 5 of them semi-rigid and one solid plastic one. The zip cords have plastic ends making them very practical. We liked the fact you can padlock the zip (padlock not included). The zip is well protected by the upper flap. There are also two extra straps in the angles of the main opening under the flap, they give extra tightening.

We liked the outer pocket where you can slide books, food, a bottle, headphones, etc. The only regret is that this pocket isn’t lockable: you can’t attach a padlock.

Just above this pocket there is a transparent window to slide your name and address. We put a business card here thinking we’d lose it because the pocket is not closed, but we didn’t, it stayed in place. By the top handle there’s a compartment with a strap in it. We didn’t really know what it was for, but there are several attachment points on the bag.

Inside the bag there is a duffle configuration, in other words there are no compartments. Three small straps can hold some things in place. A good idea is to compartmentalize your personal items in bags and then stack them inside.

Two huge mesh pockets are positioned under the flap lid, practical for dirty washing and non-breakable objects.

The tough material used stands up to the shock of dragging the bag around. When it rains: the bag isn’t waterproof but it can put up with some humidity thanks to the water repellency.

Let’s talk weight: 3850g, the Osprey Rolling Transporter 120, is much heavier than a classic duffle but much more practical!

The Osprey Rolling Transporter 120 is an excellent product, quite expensive but the design and construction is top quality, tough, durable and practical.
