Don’t bother ripping up the cardboard packaging when you release the new Petzl Meteor helmet (you can reuse it for storage!). We appreciated the added carrying case and a spare set of inner foam padding replacements.
This modern look Petzl provides a model with a thin polycarbonate shell wrapped around a polystyrene shell with wide lateral ventilation. The ventilation is effective in the activities for which it is intended: mountaineering and ski mountaineering.
This type of model didn’t exist in their range before. It’s certified mountaineering with the EN 12492 standard which mainly includes, in layman terms; protection from falling stones from above. To increase the necessary protection in downhill skiing, especially laterally, the ski standard EN1077 class b should be applied, in layman terms; to increase protection against omnidirectional impacts at high speed. Petzl defines and provides its Top and Side protection concept. This reinforces lateral shock absorption lower down on the helmet’s circumference, at the rear and sides whilst establishing a less restrictive norm, but appreciable for user’s safety.
This keeps the helmet light, fully appreciated when ski mountaineering for example, and in general.
The addition of an elastic at the rear ensures that your goggles’ strap stays in place and the goggles sit comfortably under the slight overhang at the front of the helmet. You can also attach a headlamp to the two small lugs.
Out testing you feel the excellent relationship between lightness and fit essential for these activities. Very comfortable to wear. On both size helmets, the head circumference adjustment is done using a plastic bar and two small ratchets. A different system to a twisting knob but you soon get used to it (if your gloves aren’t too thick). It can also retract inside the helmet so it’s not hanging down during transport or storage. The wide adjustment range means you can wear a light cap or a headband underneath when it’s cold. Don’t take a size too small if this option is for you! There are adjustment points on the lateral straps, for fore and aft movement, the chin strap closes with the help of magnets.
The price is good, lower than most models with this double certification. With this Meteor, Petzl offers a well-designed helmet especially for mountaineering climbing. Perfect for ski mountaineering, with a contemporary look, comfortable, extra-light and great protection. Compatible with the brand’s accessories including a visor.
