We tested the Picture Harvest Bib pant with the jacket from the same brand.
These pants are kitted with a “bio-sourced” membrane. What does that mean? A waterproof-breathable membrane that uses Pebax Renew technology: an alternative to the membrames manufactured from petrol by-products. Picture uses castor oil. Like their Harvest Jacket, the Harvest Bib adopts the same innovative fabric and is more “eco”.
This castor-based fabric (tropical shrub, is where castor oil comes from) resists bad weather (snow and rain/snow, rain). This fabric is unfortunately cold, once outside, you feel the cold on your thighs. A cold that you constantly keep when you’re skiing. And that is increased tenfold in bad weather when the chairlifts have not been cleared of snow. These are protective pants so you need an insulation layer underneath, like any product of this type.
The classic Picture Harvest Bib has fully sewn and glued-on seams and waterproof YKK zips to keep moisture out.
Two zipped vents on the side of the thighs provide effective thermoregulation. We would have liked them to go down a little bit more so that we could increase the ventilation on long exercise.
The Harvest Bib has two spacious side pockets (a DVA or a Smartphone fits perfectly). The zips on these two pockets could also be larger because once the harness is in place, it completely prevents any access to the pockets.
You can wear the Harvest Bib as bib pants or just pants. Organic Picture Clothing had the great idea of integrating a system of removable suspenders. These pants work very well in both modes. The belt loops are wide enough to slide a belt in if you want to wear them in pants mode.
The suspenders option is simply fixed with a zip around the waist of the pants. The straps are adjustable with Velcro straps, so as not to create a pressure point or any friction when carrying a backpack. There’s also a small breast pocket which, unfortunately, could have been a little larger for storing your Smartphone or DVA.
The pants are made from a three-layer stretch fabric. The stretch fabric is not very supple. As with the Picture Harvest jacket, however, there is no backlash on freedom of movement both piste skiing and/or ski touring.
The durable water-repellent treatment, without PFOA and PFOS works really well in rain/wet snow, it provides protection throughout the entire day.
The system for connecting the pants to the jacket works quite well. Take note that if you remove the snow skirt from the Harvest Jacket, this option no longer works.
The I-Fit system allows the bottom of the pants to be turned up.
The snow guard could have been more elastic in order to be tighter on the boot’s collar. The built-in hook is a good idea if you have somewhere to fix it on to, not all ski touring boots are systematically kitted out with hooks.
The silicone protective surface at the ends, to protect the base of the pants from skis edge scrapes, could have been bigger.
