What you gain in waterproofness with the Gore Tex Salewa MTN Trainer Mid GTX you lose breathability. But overall the feeling is positive. Let’s talk about the obvious problem; its weight. For size 42.5 it weighs 520 g, which is pretty heavy and therefore you have a tendency to lose energy, but the up-side is the quality of its manufacturing is unrivalled; Salewa never uses cheap materials. The shoe’s greatest quality comes in its foot placement precision and secure foothold. It’s designed to fit the foot snugly, like a climbing shoe, so the foot fit is excellent.
The toe box is narrow so you can slide your foot into climbing cracks and go up on tip-toes. Walking the position is comfortable notably at the heel where the sole is thick and high. You feel less confident in this high position, especially crossing a gradient. Heel-hold is good and the ankle remains free. The laces have six point attachments right down to the toes. A nice thick padded tongue. You need to take time lacing them up because the laces don’t slide easily. Well made, comfortable, cosy and showed no areas of weakness after several weeks testing. It’s a good tough product, but a little too heavy to give entire satisfaction.
