This Salomon QST 106 is really playful on its edges and arcs turns with abandon on compact snow. It’s surprising with this type of wide ski. To exploit it to the max off piste you need a bit of skill and weight behind you. It’s more physical on irregular and bumpy terrain, it deforms laterally and the cushioning and fluidity are reduced somewhat. Carves beautifully at speed on hard snow, which is surprising for a ski with such wide specifications even if the swap from side to side is not that snappy. You feel safe with a really good grip.
Off piste you can also rip, the wide ski lifts and floats easily across bumpy terrain although you need good control and strong thighs to keep it at heel. The tail is a little stiff and the fore and aft balance risk being tough. But the tip rocker absorbs the changing terrain well and you don’t feel the vibrations. It’s surprising but all-round the QST 106 has a greater performance, is more playful and stable on hard, compact snow than on terrain where the flow, and fun side and accessibility take a back seat. But with this width and jumping out the helicopter, no worries…!
