Salomon Sense Pro 3

The Salomon Sense Pro 3 has an air of déjà vu, which of course is not surprising, it is the evolution of the version 2 of the same name. So no surprises when we open the box or attack the first stride, we are in a universe and its sensations that we know well.

With 270g size 42 2/3, you have a (very) light shoe that you can’t feel when running. The second striking impression concerns its absence of “softness” when your foot touches the ground. The cushioning, whether under the heel or under the forefoot is very little or totally absent. On stony sections, you quickly suffer and any ideas of long distance running flies out the window. The Salomon Sense Pro 3 is for seasoned runners who have cultivated a forefoot posture or naturally possess it. The 4mm drop sits with this philosophy; the calf is definitely solicited. If you’re lucky enough to have an aerial stride, then the Salomon provides great propulsion off the forefoot. They also have good grip on wet and muddy ground. On soft ground, it is a feast of precision, lightness and grip. We enjoyed the crampons that go right up to the back of the heel to handle rear imbalances when running downhill and give extra grip. NB: the two hollowed out sections under the sole get loaded up with mud.

The foot strike is excellent. The foot contact with the shoes’ materials is snug, there are no foam padding that interferes, except at the ankle. The advantage is that the Sense Pro 3 dries ultra-fast and does not take on weight by holding water. We wondered for a moment if they could be a candidate for swim-run events … but Solomon already offers the S-Lab XA Amphib.

After many kilometers, if the size (and volume) of the Salomon Sense Pro 3 doesn’t fit you perfectly, you can feel slight compression points. At the instep you can feel the laces’ eyelets despite a technical tab made from filtering material.

For adjustment there is the Quicklace® that mustn’t be tightened too much to avoid any pressure points at the top of the foot. The laces slide pretty well on the front of the foot but to adjust precisely ideally you need to use your fingers.

The integrated stone guard is indisputably effective and does not feel stiff.
We did not run the Salomon Sense Pro 3 enough to verify that the mesh zone at the front of the foot would swallow up make up the miles without getting damaged: many Salomon models have suffered in this zone: to be checked during a long-term test.

Fairly easy to put on, you need to use the little tab on the tongue to help you.
Breathability is good and the torsional rigidity can be described as “well dosed” for this type of lightweight shoe. Overall, it is quite flexible. In terms of quality, nothing to complain about, the collages, materials and the few and far between seams are of top quality.

The Salomon Sense Pro 3 are for runners with a precise stride, forefoot landing and who search for rebound … Light, grippy in wet ground. Salomon, presents it as an all-terrain shoe, we prefer to use it on paths where the ground is not too aggressive because its cushioning is limited.
