There’s no doubt that this Salomon Sense Pro Max is discernable, not by its rather classic look, but by its sensations.
It is striking due to the very pronounced cushioning, almost soft if you are a real heel striker. The first strides feel almost “elastic” but they improve as you run with a mid-foot strike. You discover a shoe that is more reactive pushing off and it doesn’t feel soft. You don’t feel the stones underfoot. It is accurate in its foot strike, even if the front mesh is more relaxed.
The very flexible heel is extremely useful when out on long runs, that nice king size cushioning is needed at certain times.
It feels solid on the flat. For pronators the foam squashes down fairly quickly especially if you are bigger build. Torsional flexion is well balanced for a model of this type. Running across slopes the squidgy rear foam can give you a slight floaty feeling.
Remember that the Sense Pro is designed for going fast on easy tracks without the need for a mega grip. For this the sole has been well designed with just the right amount of lugs and correct lug sizes. On wet ground the grip is good. The sole doesn’t fill with mud and get heavy.
Despite the lightness of the Sense Pro Max it doesn’t compromise on comfort with its foam around a third of its heel and the toe-box has a very breathable mesh allowing your feet to stay cool and also provides volume to the shoe and good flexibility.
The Sense Pro Max has of course the appellation “Quicklace”, we would go so far as to call it the “very efficient Quicklace!” For those of you who don’t know this system, with just one hand you pull the lace, and the laces tighten from the front of the shoe to the top gracefully without any effort, and with remarkable precision. The secret? Inside the small tabs that let the laces slide through there are tiny hidden plastic tubes, which are very efficient! The surplus laces can be stored in the small pocket at the top of the tongue (pull it completely as the pocket size is designed to the millimeter). There is a minimalist stone guard for this category of shoe.
This is a shoe for going fast comfortably (foam + cushioning). Heavier runners will have to make do with the pronounced cushioning and the fast squashing down of the cushioning. This lightweight and pleasant shoe is one of the most successful in this category.
