Salomon S/Max Sigma

We were lucky enough to test the latest state-of-the-art goggles from Salomon, the S/Max Sigma, that will be out on general release in the Autumn 2018!

For three weeks we put these goggles through their paces. We skied every day in practically all conditions, except the rain. A bit of a shame because we really would’ve seen if the S/Max Sigma fogged up. That said in all other conditions we didn’t notice any fogging up at all, (and who skis in the rain anyway!). The goggles have a very effective ventilation system (with the help of air filtered by thin foam).

But, what we noticed the most was their exceptional comfort. The foam is really soft. They mold to the shape of your face making them very comfortable. You really feel like the mask is at one with your anatomy.

The various foam densities work remarkably together and contribute to this overall comfort. You would need to see over time if the foam suffers or not, for example when you slide the goggles onto your helmet.

The goggles are articulated on the sides, using two different densities of foam. Salomon have researched this area well because they adapt to the volume of your cheeks. Even when you tighten the strap strongly there is no excessive pressure in this area. You really forget you are wearing them, they are so comfortable. They are also extremely light and don’t cover your entire face and sit comfortably under the helmet’s peak.

As for visibility, the only critic we could make is maybe their slight lack of sun protection. Other goggles from other brands have a better quality. Those with sensitive eyes should avoid being in high intensity sunshine with these.

That said the details of the terrain and contrasts are extremely good. Salomon state that the S/Max amplify the blue and red waves so that your eyes can identify the variations in terrain in most conditions. Difficult to answer yes or no to that, but at any rate they seem to work very efficiently.

These goggles come with a replacement multilayered Light Blue lens for conditions with low intensity light. Our test goggles didn’t have this lens so we could not test it.

The field of vision is very good and quite honestly really pleasant. There isn’t any distortion on the sides or loss of detail. Other brands such as Oakley have a wider field of vision.

The goggles adapt well to the helmet, the strap is long enough and adjusts easily, even whilst wearing gloves. There’s an anti-slip elastomer strip on the reverse side of the strap, which does its job.

The look is chic. The goggles are light, ultra-comfortable, don’t fog up and have extremely detailed vision. It is an excellent product, that is both sober and superbly designed. We do not have its price yet when writing this (mid-Feb 2018).
