We skied several weeks non-stop with the Whitefrost Flowtec jacket and its intensive use enabled us to see its numerous qualities and a few rare flaws.
The major positive point is its comfort. Very, very nice to wear, it has been carefully designed to fit perfectly, with stretch material that adapts to your movements. Salomon have used a combination of Pertex Shield Plus and Primaloft Silver (100 g/m2) that ensures good insulation. We can never express enough the benefits of Primlaloft®, keeps you warm without retaining humidity, is lightweight, flexible and silent.
The jacket is lined and designed for cold temperatures but also breathable. It is doted with the Flowtech system. These are zips that open to allow air to circulate without the cold air touching your skin. The front zips are strategically positioned on the chest. So you have fresh air circulating without being cold. There is also the same ventilation on the back, which is only useful when not wearing a backpack.
Classically the snow-skirt has a silicone strip to prevent it from rising up. This works more or less depending on the accompanying garments.
The waistline adjusts with an elastic cord in two places: left and right. The surplus elastic could’ve been integrated into the pockets so they wouldn’t dangle outside…
We liked the large interior pocket for putting your goggles away. No zip or Velcro®.
The other inside pocket is for a purse, not a wallet as it isn’t quite big enough.
All the Whitefrost Flowtec jacket’s zips slide well. The pocket zips are too small to be grabbed with wearing big gloves. We liked the four large pockets. The waterproof zips, close upwards so even if they aren’t fully closed you won’t lose anything from the pockets accidentally.
The central zip is waterproof and has a double curser to open the jacket from the bottom. They slide easily, sometimes too easily! – It can open at the collar on its own.
The collar is just the right height: perfect protection. The inside is soft and warm. The only shame is the interior of the collar has the same colored fabric as the outside and so it gets dirty very quickly.
It has a great hood, that also fits over a helmet. It adjusts at one point at the back of the head. The hood, once folded, is supposed to stay in place on the collar thanks to a series of magnets: but they aren’t powerful enough.
This Whitefrost Flowtec is a good product; warm, comfortable, tough and very comfortable to wear. A shame there are a few niggling details that could be improved, at this price we expect no flaws.
