SKI-MOJOSILVER

We start this test of this unique product with a story: of an English inventor who gave his talents to an industry who appreciated them. This man also happened to be passionate about skiing, and Courchevel was his favorite hangout. Here he began to nurture an idea, an exoskeleton that could aid skiers in their sport: and the Ski-Mojo was born.

How does it work? You equip each leg with a flexible and rigid structure (straps, Velcro, Neoprene, metal springs). Once harnessed up, the kinetic energy stored during knee flexion is restored during the extension phase by the decompression of the spring. The gear is worn under your ski pants so you can’t even see it.

How long does it take to set-up? How much does it weigh? And how efficient is it on the snow?

When you use this Mojo for the first time you should really get a salesman to show you how it works. You can do it on your own but it takes more time, even if the instruction booklet is extremely clear and detailed.

You need to fix the two connectors to the rear of the boot shell, by screwing them on. The small metal ball must be just on the exterior of the boot in relation to the boot’s axe. We won’t go into depth of how to set it up but more into its use. Once you have read the instructions or had a demonstration, it only takes 5 minutes to set up. The connectors fixed onto the boots can stay there all season without needing to remove them. Depending on the skier and his/her position, they can provoke a slight ski divergence, so you need to move the connectors a few millimeters.

Next you fit the harness, by adjusting the lateral arms (after ensuring the pre-adjustment of the length of the femoral and tibial metal struts). You then connect them to the harness, then to the boots.

At the top of each lateral arm there is a grey button. If you press it when straightening the leg, you activate the Ski-Mojo and the spring begins to work and it’s time to get on the skis!

Once the Ski-Mojo is activated you feel an astonishing sensation, as if your legs are being “assisted”. This is only for the first few turns but the most astonishing is yet to come. The first “bad” reflex is to assume that the springs are going to do the work for you and you just need to “sit down” in skiing position and the rest is done for you – error! The Ski-Mojo respects the skier’s bent position, with the tibias pressing on the front of the boots. If you accentuate too much towards the rear, the Ski-Mojo reacts quickly and lightens the skis just as you turn and at the end of the turn: so you have a net loss of grip on the entire front of the ski and therefore a lack of grip.

Once you’ve understood how it works and you ski “naturally” you discover an amazing tool that we believe has several unique virtues. The first is that it allows you to ski and economize your energy and therefore graduate your physical energy. Basically, you rediscover your passion and youthfulness whilst skiing! You very quickly get used to the assistance: the legs and most notably the quadriceps are less solicited, less tired, and produce less lactic acid. Result: longer skiing, so you improve and you appreciate being out on the slopes. It is estimated that about 30 to 40% of energy savings are due to the Ski-Mojo.

It isn’t total assistance, the skier remains very active and free (almost) in all movements. Knee / hip angulation is perfect, carving enthusiasts are happy, the edge is frank and free. On the other hand, skidding on the flat is less easy to do. Conversions also require a little concentration. Out on the snow you don’t feel the extra weight of the equipment at all.
When skiing fast, but also in general, limit extensions because the Ski-Mojo is very active and does the job. So you need to be happy to ski without wanting to do too much: when you realize that it is a lot of fun. The only problem is when you ski without it, or disconnect it you suddenly find gravity again and you need to produce a real effort to turn!

Those who will be won over by the Ski-Mojo is, in our opinion, extremely broad: the injured skier who needs to put less pressure on his knees, hips, back, and muscles; the older skier who has lost some skills but who can, thanks to the Mojo, continue to enjoy the sensation of skiing: an unfit skier who doesn’t have time to do much sport due to work commitments; the occasional skier who comes on holiday for a week’s skiing and wants to ensure and avoid accidents because of tired legs … Ski instructors could also be very interested, they spend long days out on the snow, and their knees aren’t always on top form…
We were therefore enthusiastic about this product that should find a wide usage among a multitude of skiers, which, we have to admit, is aging. With Ski-Mojo, you can do more and do it better.

The manufacturer makes this comparison: Ski-Mojo does for skiing what the electric motor does for cycling. We totally agree.

There are some improvements to be made to the product. No doubt work on the design and better integration of some of the metal parts. At the hips, at the trochanter to be precise, the harness support could be a little more comfortable. The responsiveness when you activate or deactivate the spring to instantly switch from “ski” mode to “on” mode could be improved. But nothing major.

In the end, you should be curious and give it a try. We discovered what an exoskeleton can bring in terms of comfort, economizing physical expenditure and pleasure. Astonishing!

Once disassembled the Ski-Mojo slips into a small backpack. The Silver model is suitable for skiers weighing less than 87kg.
