Smith Maze

We have tested several Smith helmets, with more or less luck (see the many products tested on test4outside.com). If we are totally convinced by the quality of their glasses and goggles, the same feeling doesn’t run deep for their helmets. The “Maze” almost made us change our minds.

The Smith Maze is lightweight: 350g (size M, 410), the DMD weighed 365g. The Italian helmet (https://www.test4outside.com/en/produit/dmd-no-regrets/) is nonetheless one of the lightest on the market.

It does feels light on your head, and you can ski for hours with the impression of not wearing a helmet. It is flagship quality and well-appreciated.

The design is nothing remarkable, it’s simple without any great character. It is quite voluminous, so not very aesthetic, but probably very performant in terms of protection. Actually this is a point that is difficult, even impossible to judge: the volume/performance ratio. What criteria should be used? Is a bulkier helmet more protective? Can a thin helmet have the correct materials and technology to be as protective?

The Smith Maze has ultra-light In-Mold technology designed to protect the brain in the event of a shock.

We appreciated the over-all comfort especially at the neck. The foam is generous and warm. The ears are well-protected, a real cozy cocoon. Maybe a little too much, because you do lose audition – talking with friends becomes a shouting match. This could become an issue whilst out riding as you cut yourself off from surrounding sounds in the environment – therefore could be dangerous. There is a possibility to customize the foam at the ears, accessible by a zip – but it’s a bit DIY.

The Smith has 9 ventilation entrants, but they are minimalist and the helmet is rather warm. There isn’t any ventilation on top of the head. The front two air entries are efficient and don’t produce noise. We didn’t notice any irritating squeaks or noises.

The chin strap is comfortable and closes using a classic clip system. It adjusts easily, and has soft foam padding, that sometimes turns around the strap.

The head adjustment is fairly basic, an elastic strap automatically adjusts the volume. It adjusts in three positions, which isn’t very precise but most of the time it’s ok.

The goggles are held in place by an attachment strap at the back of the head and ridges that stop the strap sliding laterally.

The Smith Maze is reasonably priced, 100 euros, it is lightweight, designed for cold conditions. Its audio filtration is too high.
