Smith never go unnoticed: Especially if you choose a red lens that match the frame. The frame contours are both angular and fluid: magnificent. Wind protection whilst cycling is total. The one-piece lens is not too close to your forehead and enables air circulation therefore avoiding any form of fogging up. We tested them in the Spring and Summer and never had any fogging, not tested in Winter.
The lenses are dual treated: water and oil run off. The lenses are practically always clean. The field of vision is very wide: you have the impression you’re wearing a helicopter pilot visor.
Visual comfort is good, managing contrasting light is no problem when going from shadow to light and vice versa.
The UVA and UVB protection is good for sunglasses but not enough for extreme luminosity.
The vision is slightly pink when you look forward and with a blue tint when you look up or down. It’s not annoying but surprising at first.
For duller conditions or bad weather Smith provide another pink lens in the box that has much better visional comfort. You need a bit of care, as for all glasses, when removing one lens to replace it with another. Smith’s system is simple: you lift and pivot the arm to unclip the lens. The materials used are tough and designed to resist.
Over all we liked these Smith PivLock Arena Max, comfortable, even wearing a helmet, lightweight, very comfortable on the nose, stylish and the adaptability of the arms to your morphology.
The only slight criticism we could come up with would be that you can slightly see the nose clip in the field of vision – but that is being really picky!
These are superb sunglasses with a very stylish techno look, interchangeable lenses, tough, ultra-comfortable and delivered in a high quality glasses case. A design for all outdoor sports; cycling, MTB, triathlon, trail running and anything else you’d like to do.
These have easily won our FIRST Award.
