SMITH Quantum

We loved the Smith Rover MTB helmet that uses this same technology, and were deeply disappointed with the Quantum ski helmet.

The Quantum has the same matt finish and Koryod technology that absorbs energy from shocks. This is the honeycomb structure that you see through the ventilation holes. This system is extremely efficient in an accident but difficult to validate otherwise.

This Quantum is the classic example that even with good ideas it doesn’t necessarily produce a good product. Each individual innovation on this helmet is exceptional, but together they do not work.

The weight for example, 680g! Excessive to say the least! You feel the fatigue in your neck with the slightest of head movements. Of course the weight is usually a sign of quality materials and therefore better head protection, yet it is really too heavy.

The ventilation system is brilliant, very efficient but, as soon as you start moving with the shutters open (in two zones), the helmet starts whistling: the aerodynamic sound has not been dealt with. As soon as you go past a certain speed (not the speed of sound obviously… ) it becomes really annoying.

The head adjustment uses the Boa system, also efficient and practical but the form of the helmet is such that your head must be the correct shape. The adjustment when you tighten is powerful and the pressure is evenly spread out by the foam on the sides of the head. As the helmet is heavy, it has a tendency to move with the inertia of moving your head and therefore you need to tighten the helmet more and so you end up with pressure points…

Thanks to the magnetized chin strap, called Fidlock, it is fast, but not at all easy to use with gloves on. The chin strap didn’t have any comfort foam, which was Smith’s error because all the models have it normally. The length of the chin strap is adjusted using a small metal buckle, also not easy to use when wearing gloves. Another thing we noticed was once you take the helmet off the buckle slides undone on its own.

The head contact is really hard as the foam is way too thin. Choose the sizing carefully because you may find the top of your ears rubbing against a grey plastic piece which is part of the Boa system. This is a shame because the foam around the ears is good, soft and warm.

The Smith Quantum makes squeaky noises between the different materials used and it’s pretty annoying.

Goggles fit easily and well on the Quantum, the strap is guided and stays in place in a zone deliberately designed for this purpose (see photo). The elastic system at the back for clipping the strap in place is very easy to handle with gloves on.
