The Squad XL by Smith is one of those products that you desperately want to own because you feel like the bees knees: the design says it all. But not only should it be classy to look at, it has to do its job. That’s what we did, the job – of testing them!
We hesitated a long time deciding whether to give it the FIRST Award, but we finally decided on the “Hot Deal”. They are much cheaper than their big brother the Smith I / 07 and their performance is almost as good.
The only thing we hold against the Squad is the fogging up when it is really cold: your own heat perspiration fogs up the lens when you stop but as soon as you are moving it disappears.
For everything else the Smith is pure joy. The goggles have a panoramic lens which is super cool because you feel like you are immersed in the mountains. You can barely see the goggles’ frame, we loved it! With no distortion and the details of the terrain are well-defined; there is a slight color difference between the middle of the lens and the top but it doesn’t matter.
Lightweight, at only 125g, you quickly forget you are wearing them, despite their large size. The foam is extremely soft and comfortable. The Squad XL has a pre-shaped nose like the Smith I /07.
The entire border of the goggles has a very fine foam that ensures maximum ventilation: at high speeds you can feel a tiny slither of air passing through. The supple plastic frame fits perfectly to the anatomy of your face and doesn’t produce any kind of squeaking noise. We tested these goggles with the lens specifically for strong sun, the protection proved to be adequate. The lens is easy to clean with the fabric bag delivered with them.
The wide strap with non-slip silicone on the underside is perfect for gripping your helmet. The strap adjusts easily whilst wearing gloves. Overall the manufacturing is good quality: no visible plastic injected joints and quality materials.
A very good pair of goggles, well-designed and high performant. It’s strongest point is its fabulous panoramic lens.
