The North Face Ultra MT flirts in the minimalist category. Ground hugging with an 8mm drop. Carefully engineered with precise control running: the shoe fits well with excellent foothold front and back. It is marketed as an ultra trail running shoe, we would place it more as an intermediate distance shoe. Why? Because all the metatarsals can feel stones under foot and when you lose your concentration due to fatigue, positioning your foot is more difficult and so the shoe must compensate for this.
The heel cushioning is limited, the designers no doubt wanted to keep that feeling of ground contact. We were surprised by the thinness of the tongue, which in fact did its job well, without any pressure points noticeable. A crease in the material where the foot bends upfront produced an irritation. The six eyelets provide good distribution of pressure from the laces. The tongue remains in place throughout effort. The sole is Vibram® Megagrip full length and assures excellent grip especially in muddy conditions.
The monobloc sole gives you the sensation of being very stiff when in torsion at the back 2/3 of the shoe, but whilst running it is fluid. Last point, this Men Ultra MT could open the way for North Face trail running shoes to be really competitive products.
