The protective jacket from Vertical, designed for trekking, comes at a very interesting price for a product that is technically identical to other brands that are at twice the price… Of course, the attention to detail is not quite the same, the stitching may be a little wonky here and there, the zip tags are a bit oversized, the cut of the jacket is not quite perfect in its fit, but the Vertical Trek Plume jacket does nevertheless prove its worth against the elements. We tested this jacket over a long period of time, and in very heavy weather. We were very surprised at its skill at keeping out the wet, even whilst wearing a backpack. Even where the shoulder straps sit and obviously put pressure, no water seeped in.
In terms of breathability, we were also pleasantly surprised by its performance. We knew the MP+ membrane (Ripstop Light 2 layers) was happy in these kinds of damp conditions but not to this point (we also like the Dermizax used by other brands Peak Performance or Kjus). We even ran with the Trek Plume and the transfer of humidity was efficient even then, assuming you are wearing a technical tee shirt underneath and mid-layer.
The fabric is slightly stretchy and pleasant to wear as it moves with you without deforming. The inside is soft to the touch.
Size M weighs 300g, so can happily slide into any pack in case of bad weather. The hood fits well and adjusts in 3 different places. The peak doesn’t cover too much laterally which is useful when wearing a head torch as it doesn’t go in front of it. You can store the hood in the collar, which closes with Velcro.
The collar is quite high and loose so you can easily wear a polar fleece underneath without the neck being too tight.
Practical large underarm zips for ventilation. All the zips are waterproof and slide with ease. Vertical have used an anti-slip finish on the shoulders for rucksack shoulder straps. The jacket is also a good length at the back which protects well.
We were a bit sceptic when we received this jacket and totally surprised at its efficiency on the terrain. A very good product with value for money/waterproofness and weight ratio. It is easily a product that could be used for trail running when the weather turns bad.
We used this equipment over a long period of time
