EIGER ULTRA TRAIL: The Ogre
In Jean-Charles Perrin’s opinion, the Ultra Trail World Tour’s development manager , “this leg is one of the most beautiful in the circuit”. It is a pretty mean race, with a staggering profile: 101km for 6700 meters of elevation climb! The only time it is flat, is in the aid stations… You need to be both hardcore for the evil climbs and ultra fast downhill. The German, Stephen Hugenschmidt, knocked off 30-mins from the previous record with 11-hours 1-min. Andrea Huser, who was on home ground, also lead the race after Kathrin Götz’s injury. The course is dominated by the “Ogre”, the Eiger mountain. It is on these mountain faces that some of the most striking stories of mountaineering have been written. Ueli Steck made it his playground, with solo speed records. His commitment forced respect. Ueli also liked running this ultra trail. This region of Switzerland is exotic with its many cogwheel trains, Swiss-German dialect, old-fashioned hotels, and its wealthy English, Qatari and Asian clientele … Interlaken, Grindelwald, Wengen have always been celebrated for sport, the trail colonizes these mountains, which were born for challenges. The enthusiasm is real.
