As its name suggests, the Black Diamond Vista Trail 20 is a trail-inspired backpack known for its versatility. It’s ideal for a wide range of athletic activities, standing out for its adaptability, even if it’s not built for highly technical use.
At the top, the Vista Trail 20 features a discreet top pocket. When fully packed, it may slightly encroach on the main compartment space, requiring some reorganization. A small internal hook is perfect for securing keys. The main 20-liter compartment offers generous storage.
On the sides, you’ll find two stretch fabric side pockets—great for water bottles, snacks, or gloves. The front pocket, made of the same stretch material, runs almost the full height of the pack and is convenient for stashing a rain jacket or other small items. However, since it’s an open pocket, it’s best used for gear that won’t easily fall out.
The Vista Trail 20 is equipped with two upper compression straps on each side, but none on the lower part. This design choice means it’s not suited for carrying technical gear like skis—a deliberate decision by Black Diamond, in line with the trail-oriented purpose of this pack.
Its trail DNA shines through in the details. On the left shoulder strap, there’s a stretch pocket ideal for a small bottle, energy gels, bars, or a phone, secured with an elastic band. On the right side, Black Diamond’s Z-pole system features two elastic loops for stashing trekking poles. We found that depending on the model of poles, the elastics can be a bit snug for carrying two poles, though they work perfectly for one. If carrying two, careful positioning is needed to prevent discomfort.
The hip belt of the Vista Trail 20 is also trail-focused. On the left, there’s an open stretch pocket for small items or gels. On the right, a secure zip pocket is essential for your phone, GPS, sunscreen, or anything that needs to be safe and easily accessible.
The wide, comfortable lumbar belt features a grippy texture that prevents the pack from sliding laterally and helps channel ventilation. Lumbar support is excellent. The back panel combines mesh and foam for great breathability, a design that’s also carried over to the shoulder straps.
The Slide-Fit adjustment system is both clever and simple: just open the Velcro flap at the center of the back panel to shift between S and M sizing in seconds, with the option for fine-tuned intermediate adjustments. A slim internal metal frame adds extra rigidity, helping the pack retain its shape when fully loaded.
Inside the main compartment, there’s a hydration sleeve, though the attachment point under the top pocket is not the most convenient to access.
The Black Diamond Vista Trail 20 is a lightweight and comfortable backpack, praised for its internal frame that helps it keep its shape. Designed for speed, it’s perfect for day hikes or short outings. A small loop allows you to attach an ice axe. Lastly, a major highlight of the Vista Trail 20 is that it’s made from 100% recycled materials—a commitment we commend from Black Diamond.
