The three criteria to consider before acquiring a headlamp are essentially the following: battery autonomy, power and weight. The FF150 by BEAL, answers to all three. Battery autonomy during a winter test in the mountains easily assures, depending on use, between five hours on maximum power and 180 hours in ultra economy.
A battery warning light flashes on the side. The 150 lumens power is spread between two main sources, enabling a full power beam of up to 60metres, a sufficient distance for most outdoor activities, the exception being for ultra-fast trail runners who want to see even further ahead… At only 3.4oz, what can you say! Perfection in weight to power ratio. The general ergonomics are well-designed, compact, simple usage, with two buttons to choose the lighting mode, from width to focus.
Here’s a nice little trick, you can combine the two sources of light, or activate them independently one to the other, for example simultaneously you can have the light beam to light up in the distance, and the one to light up your feet. The red light mode is welcome, perfect for moving around a refuge at night without disturbing fellow sleepers, or in flash mode for help in an emergency. The different combinations are carried out using the two buttons located on the top of the lamp, a bit of practice ensures better use.
The oversize buttons are impressed in the structure and difficult to turn on becoming more problematic with gloves on, or freezing hands. The headband is simple and comfortable with precise adjustment. It lasts well and you can detach it for washing. As far as waterproofness, it conforms to the standard IPX 6, in other words it is rain and snow resistant but not waterproof if fully immersed. A flexible headlamp for all outdoor activities, in the mountains, trail running, hiking, powerful and at a very reasonable price.
