It didn’t take us long to award the La Sportiva Prodigio Hike GTX with our FIRST Test4outside award. First, there’s the design — a successful blend of classic elements and fresh innovation for a hiking shoe. Or rather, a fast hiking shoe, as defined by the brand.
Where to start, with so many strong points? Let’s begin with the knit collar — extremely effective at keeping out debris. The top of the collar features two pull loops that assist with putting the shoe on. The front loop also allows access to the lace stow pocket. These are the kinds of thoughtful details that make this shoe so appealing: nothing superfluous, no marketing fluff — just smart, functional design.
The fit is another highlight: snug, precise, and performance-oriented. That said, hikers with wide feet might find it a bit tight. But thanks to this close fit, the shoe offers remarkable precision on foot placements. It’s the opposite of a clunky boot.
Cushioning is extremely well calibrated — generous enough to absorb impacts and smooth out rough ground, but not so soft that it dulls the feel of the trail. You maintain excellent ground feedback, even in tricky sections. It’s worth noting we previously praised the trail running version of the Prodigio, and this fast hiking model is cut from the same exceptional cloth.
Grip from the outsole is excellent — reliable and secure even on slick rock slabs. The toe bumper provides solid protection without adding too much stiffness to the front of the shoe.
Built with a sock-like construction, the Prodigio Hike GTX holds the foot so well that you could almost wear it without laces. Just be careful not to overtighten. It’s a robust, durable, lightweight, and waterproof product — and the sole shows no signs of compression over time.
This is the very definition of a fast hiking shoe — a true benchmark in its category. A clear winner of our FIRST Test4outside award.
