Simond Moufles-Mitaines MT900

We used the Simond MT900 Convertible Mittens on several mountain outings, mainly for ski touring.

The concept of convertible gloves is not new in the mountain world. The Simond MT900 Convertible Mittens build on this well-known idea, combining a fingerless glove with a fold-over mitten cover to switch between warmth and dexterity. In the field, the system works simply and effectively. When the mitten cover is in place, the fingers are grouped together and better protected from the wind. When folded back, you regain greater precision for handling gear or performing simple tasks.

Over the course of our outings, we found that the magnet designed to hold the mitten cover in the open position works quite well. Even with an additional layer worn over them, it holds securely and prevents the flap from moving during activity.

Another appreciated feature: once the mitten is folded back, the flap does not interfere with the use of pole straps. During our ski touring trips or hikes with poles, we did not experience any particular discomfort in this regard.

In terms of construction, the Simond MT900 Convertible Mittens use simple but suitable materials for mountain use. The outer fabric is windproof and water-repellent, effectively protecting against cold air and light moisture. Inside, the polyester lining provides a comfortable feel and contributes to thermal insulation. The palm and thumb are reinforced with an abrasion-resistant coating, which is a welcome feature for durability when handling poles, equipment, or zippers.

In terms of warmth, the product performs well for dynamic activities. The mitten effectively blocks the wind and helps retain sufficient heat while moving. As is often the case with this type of lightweight and versatile glove, the limits mainly appear during prolonged stops or in very low temperatures.

When it comes to handling, dexterity remains good in fingerless mode for everyday mountain tasks. Adjustments, opening zippers, or handling simple objects can be done without particular difficulty.

We did, however, identify a few areas for improvement. The cord at the wrist, as well as those on the fingers, could be slightly longer or easier to grip, especially with cold hands. Improved handling would make these adjustments more practical in the field.

Overall, the Simond MT900 Convertible Mittens offer a functional and versatile solution for winter mountain activities. Without reinventing the concept of convertible gloves, they fulfill their role well by providing a good balance between protection from the cold, ease of use, and modularity. All in all, they prove effective for active use, with a few design details that could still be optimized. An unbeatable price.
