We put the Arc’teryx Lithos SL Harness through several weeks of testing, alternating between indoor climbing sessions and days at the crag, from technical movement drills to long sport climbing outings. Our goal was to determine whether this performance-oriented harness could successfully combine low weight, comfort, and unrestricted freedom of movement without sacrificing too much everyday usability.
From the very first climbs, the Arc’teryx Lithos SL Harness stands out for how unobtrusive it feels. Once properly adjusted, it quickly disappears from your mind. The waistbelt follows the hips naturally, while the leg loops provide outstanding freedom of movement. Whether making high steps, heel hooks, or other demanding body positions, we never experienced any restriction. This exceptional mobility is undoubtedly one of the harness’s greatest strengths.
Arc’teryx has also redesigned its sizing system by pairing different waist sizes with different leg loop volumes. This approach allows for a much more precise fit than a traditional harness. Once you’ve found the right combination, the harness remains secure and evenly supportive throughout an entire climbing session.
Comfort also exceeded our expectations given the harness’s minimalist design. We anticipated the typical compromises associated with ultralight harnesses, particularly during extended hangs or prolonged top-rope sessions. In practice, however, load distribution proved effective, and pressure points remained well controlled. Overall, it felt more comfortable than several competing harnesses in the same category. While the Arc’teryx Lithos SL Harness doesn’t match the plush comfort of more heavily padded models, it strikes an impressive balance between weight, slimness, and comfort.
The two front gear loops perform well, with their semi-rigid construction making it easy to rack and retrieve quickdraws without taking your eyes off the climb. Build quality is equally impressive. The materials inspire confidence, the craftsmanship is excellent, and the overall finish reflects Arc’teryx’s well-earned reputation for premium technical equipment.
On the other hand, the Arc’teryx Lithos SL Harness fully embraces its sport climbing focus. With only two gear loops, its limitations become apparent as soon as you move beyond single-pitch climbing. On multi-pitch routes, traditional climbing, or alpine objectives, carrying capacity quickly becomes insufficient. This is not a design flaw but rather a deliberate choice by Arc’teryx, prioritizing simplicity and minimal weight over versatility.
We also noticed that the belay loop, which appears remarkably thin, can feel slightly unsettling during the first few uses. It fully complies with current safety standards and quickly inspires confidence in practice, but its minimalist appearance may require a brief adjustment period.
Finally, selecting the correct size deserves careful attention. The new sizing system is a genuine advantage, but it also makes trying the harness on almost essential. Choosing the wrong combination of waist size and leg loop volume could significantly reduce the benefits of its tailored fit.
Rather than trying to be the most versatile harness on the market, the Arc’teryx Lithos SL Harness stays true to its intended purpose. Lightweight, precise, and exceptionally comfortable to wear, it is an excellent choice for climbers focused on performance, whether indoors or at the sport crag, who value minimalist, highly efficient equipment without unnecessary extras. It earned our Test4outside Core Award, a distinction we believe is thoroughly deserved.
Climbers who regularly tackle multi-pitch routes or alpine objectives will likely prefer a more versatile harness with greater gear-carrying capacity. Within its intended niche, however, the Lithos SL Harness performs exceptionally well and once again demonstrates Arc’teryx’s expertise in designing premium technical climbing equipment.
