This Salomon Wings Pro looks like we have seen it before. The quick lace system is definitely fast and practical out on the trails. But it is linked together using four eyelets (fabric loops), which do not enable you to tighten right to the end of the foot. The foothold in this part is not strong enough. There is a contrast between the heel, which is “pinched” and the forefoot, which floats a little. If you over tighten there is a pressure point at the top of the foot.
This is a well-known pressure point to Salomon users and can transform into tendinitis, so be careful to not over tighten. The pocket to hide the laces inside is not easily accessible and fiddly. The forefoot protection is well proportioned and also adds a little weight and inertia. The major high point of the Wings Pro is its unrivalled stability.
It gives you confidence in the uphill in tough terrain as much as the downhill. Comfort remains Spartan, you feel the materials. There is little in the way of foam for comfort. The material at the forefront of the foot near the toes wears out quickly leaving holes. Firm cushioning, but present. We did not notice the feeling of stones underfoot. It is a trail running shoe that could also be used for fast hiking.
