The first noticeable observation about this Goretex triple layer jacket is that the fabric doesn’t feel that soft, yet it is nevertheless very comfortable. That said if you are hoping to discreetly take animal photos– forget it, too much noise! It’s worth noting that the stiffness of the material evolves after washing, it all becomes softer. You win flexibility and lose waterproofness, as the water repellent product disappears. For mountaineering use we would have preferred brighter colors. The M’s Front Point Shell exists in four colors. Another inconvenience with the material being stiff is that it is difficult to fold up and squash it into your bag. That said there is a great feeling of freedom of movement and it is also a guarantee of solidity thanks to the superior denier used.
Protection is the main quality of this jacket, against all bad weather as well as in tough rocky terrain. The waterproofness, windproofness and breathability are perfectly executed in wild rainy and windy weather: no complaints, everything works like a dream. The adjustable hood is so well designed that you can tighten it snugly to your head, like a woolly hat. Even without necessarily closing the collar completely. All adjustments are easily accessible using the tag, the base of the jacket is tightened or the hood (collar and behind the head) without hunting for the accessory. The last word is for the release system for untightening, which is done just by pressing an easily accessible button. Would need to see if it still works well after a lot of use.
The four pockets are well placed: two up high and two low down. The zips are quite difficult to use, the high ones have a big zip and the lower ones the overlap stops you from getting hold of the zip’s pull tag. The main zip isn’t that easy to use because it is so stiff, especially near the neck, you need two hands to close the flap and zip it. On the other hand opening is a cinch. The lateral ventilation openings are difficult to open and practically impossible to manipulate with a backpack on. The sleeve Velcro is also rather stiff to use. For those who are looking for a lightweight jacket this one is rather heavy, but very robust and no doubt has a longer life span. Over all it is a very tough and functional protective jacket. A good long-term investment.
