Salomon S/Max 10

We tested it in the 170 cm length. The Salomon S/Max 10 is aimed at skiers looking for a ski that is very easy to control in drifted, slid, or raised attitude. It feels very comfortable in phases where you don’t immediately engage the edge. You actually have to search for the edge; the Salomon S/Max 10 doesn’t naturally set into a carved, directional edge grip. Its sidecuts are not very aggressive, and the tip doesn’t necessarily bite. This can be an advantage in straight-line skiing, where the Salomon S/Max 10 doesn’t feel like it’s skidding.

Easy as it is, the Salomon S/Max 10 is not a beginner’s ski for carving because it does require effort. You need to position yourself, create some angulation to find the edge, and you need to go fast… You have to add things that the ski doesn’t provide spontaneously. So, the Salomon S/Max 10 is a little less fluid in carved turns. But it is very convincing and enjoyable in all drifted/slid phases. If you consider it as a carving tool, it’s less credible. Other skis engage the edge quickly and allow you to move to the next technical level more rapidly.

We found the Salomon S/Max 10 to be a fun, easy ski that is aimed at 80% of intermediate-level skiers and beyond. It never catches you out, even with rearward weight distribution errors, the tail isn’t too dominant. It’s progressive, soft, and provides little feedback into the legs. It easily transitions into turns in a drifted/slid position without needing any heavy effort.

A heavier skier might stress the tip, which doesn’t seem to have much material in it.

For someone who wants to focus on edge engagement, they’ll need to manage their inputs, but the effect is very pleasant. It flows nicely and holds well on hard snow. However, if you push it by applying pressure to the boot tongue or reduce the radius too much, it starts to struggle. You’ll get segments of turns, but not a finely shaped arc. You’ll likely reach the limits of its structure in these types of directional carving moves.

You can engage the edge in small turns, and the Salomon S/Max 10 works, but you won’t always get perfectly shaped curves.

We like the colorful edges of the ski. Made in Bulgaria.

A rather enjoyable ski. Not 100% carving-oriented. Easy, fun, and ideal for cruising on piste at moderate speeds.
