Deuter Freecline 15

This Deuter Freecline 15 backpack (a German brand with extensive experience in this type of product) is designed to support skiers throughout their day on the slopes. The “electric blue” color of our model is pleasing—neither too flashy nor too prone to showing dirt. Its thicker and darker fabric on the lower part is a smart choice to withstand abrasion when placed on the ground.

With a capacity of 15 liters and a height of 48 cm, it’s compact. For a day trip, it offers enough room for all sizes, allowing you to carry the essentials or what you wish to bring (clothes, food, etc.).

For off-piste skiing, the Deuter Freecline 15 is already well-packed with mandatory safety and technical gear: shovel, probe, first aid kit, skins, possibly a hydration pack or drink. This leaves less room for other items or anything extra.

This Deuter Freecline 15 is equipped with thoughtful and complete technical features and ergonomics. The two adjustable lower side straps allow you to secure a snowboard against the back of the backpack.

The side straps, each clipped on the sides, can reduce the volume and compress the lower part of the bag to prevent any items from shifting inside (though we never felt the need for this).

The upper strap that runs from one shoulder strap to the other provides the top attachment. It also comes into play if you choose to carry your skis diagonally, strapped together. It holds them in place by attaching its hook to another small loop beneath the top carrying handle. The heel of the skis fits into the adjustable strap located at the bottom right corner. This strap can be hidden in a small, discreet pocket located next to it, behind the fabric.

This strap can also be used to secure poles or, more effectively, an ice axe held in place at the top by an elastic loop with a hook.

Inside the main compartment, which opens on the upper half, there’s the classic hydration pocket. The tube can exit and be fixed along either the left or right shoulder strap. Sewn and calibrated fabric dividers are dedicated for storing the shovel and probe, and possibly the first aid kit and skins.

We appreciated the small additional pocket at the top with its soft fabric interior, like “polar fleece,” perfect for sliding in goggles or glasses without scratching the lens.

The helmet net was not forgotten. It comes out of its dedicated pocket with a vertical zipper on the outside of the Deuter Freecline 15. It locks into place with clips to secure it.

It’s removable, so if you don’t need it, it frees up a small extra flat pocket for use.

15 liters may not seem like much, but the Deuter Freecline 15 handles being loaded well (recommended load by the manufacturer: between 3 and 6 kilograms). The back has a balanced rigidity, and the three foam patches that line it provide comfort during carrying on the main pressure points. The back of the pack minimizes heat buildup across the entire surface.

The shoulder straps didn’t cause discomfort during prolonged wear, even when we intentionally increased the load, especially since the waist belt, with its foam sections on the hips, is efficient.

The metal sliders on the YKK zippers are smooth to operate and durable. While the zippers are fairly sealed, they are not waterproof and won’t withstand continuous rain.

Although more intensive and long-term use would be needed to assess it fully, during our test period, we didn’t notice any significant abrasion of the fairly thick woven fabric, which inspires confidence. Its weight remains reasonable.

Of course, some may find the volume limiting for carrying gear.

For a day trip, this Deuter Freecline 15 is a well-suited companion—classic in design, comprehensive, and reliable.

And if you want to use it for another activity or purpose, it remains a pleasant little backpack.

"For a day trip, this Deuter Freecline 15 is a well-suited companion—classic in design, comprehensive, and reliable."
