We really liked this small freeride backpack, which showcases all of Camelbak’s expertise when it comes to hydration systems.
The 2-liter hydration bladder is very well integrated, sitting in a dedicated compartment right behind the back panel, accessible via a zip. The bladder’s wide opening makes filling and cleaning easy, and attaching it to the sleeve is straightforward — all fairly standard Camelbak quality. The highlight: the insulated tube, neatly routed through the right shoulder strap, which is also insulated. The leak-free bite valve is easy to use and can be fully removed for cleaning.
As for the rest of the pack, it does the job well. Carry comfort is good as long as you don’t overload the Camelbak Powderhound 12L. With skis strapped on, it’s best suited for short ascents or quick transitions — the pack is small, and its back panel is quite flexible. The hip belt is slim and easy to fasten. Skis can be carried laterally or diagonally, but take our advice: skip the awkward side carry, which is fiddly and ineffective — diagonal carry is the way to go. We didn’t test it with a snowboard. The shoulder straps are fairly comfortable when the pack is lightly loaded, but with heavier gear or skis attached, you’ll quickly feel some shoulder pressure.
We particularly liked the durable, water-resistant fabric, which feels tough and protective. A side zip pocket lets you secure small valuables like keys, while the top compartment is easily accessible thanks to a smooth-running zip with a pull cord.
