The design of this Asics Gel-Trabuco 13 has been significantly updated compared to the 12-series model we previously tested. The new version feels noticeably firmer. However, it’s important to note that the cushioning tends to soften over the course of several runs.
In any case, the cushioning is present, but not overdone. It effectively absorbs major impacts while maintaining a good level of comfort. It doesn’t compromise lateral stability. Overall, the Gel-Trabuco 13 feels close to the ground, with minimal rocking. Despite its 8 mm drop, the runner doesn’t feel elevated: ankle stability remains solid. On that note, the upper struck us as particularly low-cut.
The Asics Gel-Trabuco 13 offers excellent ground feel, allowing for precise foot placement and good toe-off efficiency. That said, it’s not a particularly responsive shoe—you shouldn’t expect a pronounced bounce.
Stable and predictable, it performs well on smoother trails while still handling more technical terrain. The outsole provides solid grip (have the delamination issues seen on previous models been resolved?). The rock plate is rigid at the forefoot and quite soft on the sides, which results in slightly limited protection on rocky ground. However, the integrated plate in the sole does a good job of shielding the foot from sharp stones, making downhill running feel confident and controlled.
The lacing system works well, featuring traditional flat laces. Excess lace can be tucked into an elastic loop—not the most stylish solution, but it gets the job done. Heel lockdown is effective, keeping the foot securely in place at the back of the shoe.
Overall, this is a lightweight shoe with modest cushioning but strong performance. The grip is excellent, and despite a seemingly high midsole, the ride feels low to the ground.
