No major revolution with the Hoka Mach X 2, which follows in the footsteps of its predecessor — but several notable improvements make this a clearly upgraded version. The build quality is visibly enhanced, with a Matryx-style mesh upper, no exposed seams, a redesigned tongue, and updated outsole geometry.
Marketed by Hoka as a road racing shoe, the Mach X 2 certainly meets the brief in terms of responsiveness and propulsion, but this definition may actually understate its versatility. This is a shoe that can just as easily suit runners with a less refined stride or those running at more moderate paces.
The midsole delivers strong performance, while remaining forgiving of less precise foot strikes — especially for heel strikers — and provides ample cushioning when needed. It’s a shoe that can adapt: sharp and fast when you push it, yet still comfortable and forgiving when you ease off.
Although there’s no carbon plate, the Hoka Mach X 2 delivers excellent energy return and a smooth forward roll. The ride feels dynamic and fluid, with enough cushioning under the heel for those who rely on it, but also well-suited to forefoot runners, thanks to a responsive and natural toe-off.
The foot lockdown is impressive, despite the shoe’s minimalist structure, which helps explain its light weight (260g). Lacing is secure, and fit is snug without feeling constrictive.
All in all, the Hoka Mach X 2 is a balanced, high-performing road shoe that’s both accessible and exciting to run in. Fast, fun, and forgiving — it offers great energy return and easy handling, even at high speeds.
We awarded it a First Award for its top-tier performance and user-friendly nature.
