We had the chance to test the Rudy Project Astral sunglasses over several long months. Despite their ultralight weight—just 26 grams on our scale—they never showed signs of weakness or fragility.
Built around a frameless single-lens shield, the Astral features a finely tuned design focused on minimalism and aerodynamics. Marketed as a versatile performance model within Rudy Project’s range, it’s well suited for endurance sports like trail running, triathlon, cross-country skiing, biathlon, and cycling.
And indeed, it ticks all the boxes: lightness, secure fit, helmet compatibility, airflow protection, sweat management(thanks to the frameless lens that doesn’t trap moisture), UV filtering, and stability during movement.
We especially appreciated the absence of glare. Under certain light angles, we noticed a very slight diffraction effect on the upper ridge of the lens, but it was subtle and never disruptive.
The Astral is remarkably comfortable, to the point you forget you’re wearing it—especially during high-impact activities like trail running. The adjustable nosepiece helps ensure a snug and reliable fit. The lens performs well in managing contrast and adapting to varying light conditions.
That said, solar protection is somewhat limited compared to other models we’ve tested. And for cycling, the lens isn’t oversized, so don’t expect the same level of wind shielding as with larger, wraparound options. Still, the Astral holds its own in most conditions.
The lens also proved to be scratch-resistant, a nice bonus for long-term use. It comes with a soft fabric pouch for protection.
In short, the Rudy Project Astral is a high-quality, lightweight, and versatile pair of sunglasses that’s comfortable, affordable, and tailored for endurance athletes. It fully deserves our Hot Deal Award for its excellent value for money.
