A shift in tone with the Salomon S/Lab Pulsar 4, which remains a high-performance racing shoe but with a slightly different approach. Notably, it sheds 50 grams compared to the previous version. It now feels like a more “substantial” shoe in terms of design and dimensions. One tester even noted it feels less fluid.
On the trails, the S/Lab Pulsar 4 feels easier to handle than before. While the heel is still narrow—as with previous models—stability has improved, even though the stack height still gives a sense of elevation off the ground. The specs: 6mm drop, 28mm forefoot, 34mm heel.
We really appreciated the cushioning balance, which still allows for good ground feel, especially under the forefoot where filtration is minimal. On smoother, faster sections and during pickups, the Pulsar 4 delivers solid acceleration. Energy return is noticeable, without compromising foot placement or overall stability.
The Pulsar 4 remains a slim, precise shoe, with reasonable torsional flexibility. However, grip on wet rocks is not its strong suit. The outsole performs well as long as you’re not venturing into muddy terrain.
Putting the shoe on isn’t the easiest—it really needs to be opened up. Personally, we think a small pull tab on the heelwould be a welcome addition, even if it might detract slightly from the sleek design. The mesh is durable, and the toe bumper is well thought-out. The fit is snug and race-ready, which we loved. Also worth noting: Salomon has updated the lace garage, taking into account previous user feedback—well done.
This is a racing shoe that remains accessible, and well-balanced in terms of performance. It’s less aggressive and sharp than previous versions, but just as effective.
