The Arc’teryx Serratus Hoody is a technical softshell jacket specifically designed for alpine climbing and mountaineering. It features a hybrid construction using two fabrics: Fortius™ DW 2.0 and Aequora AirPerm™—somewhat cryptic names, admittedly! This body-mapped design aims to optimize protection and breathability depending on the zone.
We tested the jacket over numerous climbing and mountain hiking outings. The generous cut allows for layering with a midlayer without restriction. Arm mobility is excellent—you can lift your arms fully without the fabric pulling, which is a real plus during technical moves. The sleeves provide solid wrist coverage, even when fully extended.
The hood fits well over a helmet and doesn’t compromise peripheral vision. We were able to adjust it easily, even with light gloves on.
The dual-fabric construction performs as intended. Fortius™ DW 2.0, placed on high-abrasion areas (shoulders, arms), offers good resistance to wear and tear. Meanwhile, Aequora AirPerm™, used on the back and underarms, efficiently wicks away body moisture.
The Serratus Hoody packs down compactly and fits easily into a backpack.
We noticed a clear difference in thermal comfort compared to standard softshells, especially at belay stations in the sun, where overheating was much less of an issue.
In windy conditions, the Serratus Hoody performs impressively. We tested it in estimated wind speeds of 50–60 km/h and found it provided excellent wind protection.
In the rain, the DWR treatment holds up well under light showers (5–10 minutes), but during sustained rain, water quickly begins to seep in. As expected, this is not a waterproof jacket.
After four months of intensive use, the materials have held up well. There are a few minor signs of wear in the more breathable areas, but the reinforced zones remain in great condition.
The slightly elevated pockets are spacious and harness-compatible, easily holding a phone, topo map, or energy bars.
The two-way main zipper is especially useful at belay stances—it allows you to put on or take off the jacket easily and, when unzipped from the bottom, provides access to your belay device without needing to remove the jacket entirely.
As expected from Arc’teryx, the build quality and fit are outstanding, though this also places the Serratus Hoody in the premium price segment.
We recommend it for alpine climbing, multi-pitch routes, classic mountaineering, and hiking in dry and windy conditions.
The Serratus Hoody successfully fulfills its role as a specialized technical softshell. The hybrid construction offers real advantages in thermal comfort and freedom of movement.
That said, its price and focused design make it best suited for committed and regular users.
