Sun Valley Kyrah

We tested the Sun Valley “Kyrah” padded ski jacket in winter conditions, and the first thing that stands out is its high level of warmth. The brand claims a “down-jacket spirit,” and rightly so: the Kyrah ski jacket offers very effective insulation, at the cost of a relatively substantial weight, making it a model clearly oriented toward thermal comfort rather than lightness. It features Primaloft insulation, which does not retain moisture.

The outer fabric benefits from a water-repellent treatment and a windproof function, ensuring solid protection against the elements. The overall design is classic and well-finished, with a flocked logo on the left arm and jersey bands around the collar, adding a discreet and elegant visual touch. We like its understated style—just the right amount.

We appreciated the waterproof construction of the Sunvalley Kyrah ski jacket, ensured by fully sealed seams and waterproof zippers on both the side pockets and the main front zip. Thermal protection is reinforced by a double-zip system, which prevents the formation of cold spots. The inner zip extends into a protective chin guard, preventing unpleasant friction during movement. The jacket is rated at 20,000 Schmerbers.

The dual-collar system of the Sunvalley Kyrah ski jacket is fairly close-fitting and designed to work as a unit: the inner collar only allows the use of a thin neck gaiter, while the outer collar sits flush against it without leaving any gaps. This design effectively prevents air and water from entering. However, it may not suit those who are sensitive to a tight or restrictive feel around the neck.

The thumb loops are intentionally wide, allowing multiple layers to be worn underneath without creating tension at the wrists. The adjustable Velcro cuffs are robust and provide precise adjustment, making it easy to tuck the jacket into gloves while ensuring good thermal sealing.

The Sunvalley Kyrah ski jacket is equipped with a powder skirt. However, we note that its relatively high positioning limits freedom of movement: even when fully loosened, it prevents the jacket from dropping back down properly when raising the arms, which can be restrictive during action.

Inside the jacket, two panels of double-layer mesh fabric located at the shoulders promote light ventilation and contribute to improved internal moisture management.

The hood, like the rest of the Sunvalley Kyrah ski jacket, is thick, warm, and comfortable. It provides effective protection when fully closed and features a drawcord adjustment for a precise fit. However, it is not compatible with wearing a ski helmet underneath.

The zippered inner pocket is generously sized and very practical for securing personal items. We do regret its high placement on the chest, which may prove uncomfortable for some women.

Overall, this is a very warm and highly protective ski jacket, designed to cope with cold conditions and built with serious attention to waterproofing. It does, however, present a few ergonomic limitations depending on body shape and intended use. A clean, tasteful design offered at a reasonable price.
