Last year, we tested version 4 of the ASICS Trabuco Max 4. Version 5 of this iconic trail running shoe has just been released.
We find the foundations of the previous version, to which we awarded a First Test4outside Award. Indeed, the ASICS Trabuco Max 5 retains all the qualities that had impressed us.
The main strength of the ASICS Trabuco Max 5 lies in its excellent balance between cushioning and stability. For an oversized-looking shoe with a high stack height, you might expect some rolling or instability. That’s not the case: ground contact is well controlled, and the midsole foam does not collapse.
You also get that well-distributed underfoot cushioning—neither too firm nor too soft. It allows you to maintain a smooth stride without losing energy and to handle technical terrain without discomfort.
The outsole provides good grip, with moderately deep lugs consistent with a “long-distance” focus. Durability will need to be monitored over time. The ASICS Trabuco Max 5 is less dynamic than more aggressive shoes designed for shorter distances, but its comfort/efficiency balance works strongly in its favor for ultra distances.
ASICS announces a weight reduction of 13 grams compared to the previous model. It’s not especially noticeable: in the same size (42.5), we weighed the ASICS Trabuco Max 4 at 305 grams, while the ASICS Trabuco Max 5 came in at 300 grams on our scale. The new model removes the rear pull tab, now unnecessary since the foot slips easily into the shoe.
We also noticed a revised lacing system, still just as effective. The elastic loop used to secure excess laces is positioned diagonally—an original touch. The tongue design is particularly successful, with soft and comfortable materials.
The rock plate is highly effective. The heel is well supported and surrounded by comfort padding. Overall construction is carefully executed.
A very good long-distance shoe, featuring well-balanced cushioning. Its comfort does not come at the expense of performance.
